Piako Roads, Drains and Bridges.
SUPERVISOR JOHNSON’S REPORT.
At the Piako County Council meeting .Supervisor W. R. Johnsoix'i report was [pad, and the various recommendations therein will be given effect to. follows Riding.—Tin gravdlimr road has been m.v per yard, and . total about £33. to, but there was no immediate urgency. He would not advise proceeding with the work at Franklin’s culvert until the creek is opened up. The Hungahunga Drainage Board had this word undttr way. Tenders had been called for deepening Lockyer’s road drain, and the tender of Mr Bemrose had been accepted at 8s lOd per chain. The work was making fair progress. The Binding at Baker’s bridge road had been done at 2s per yard, and was a first-class job.
Waihou Riding. —Several small works had been attended to. Re Mace’s drain Mr Hines was desirous that the drain should be cleaned out, and was prepared to do all the work through his section provided the Council would make provision to get the water away. The Dairy Company had agreed to assist, but had since decided to put in a septic tank for the creamery, and could not now incur other expenditure, but would cjean the top end of the drain in their property. He .recommended that some help should be given to Mr Hines. The roads, wherever necessary, had been patched and put yj good order for the winter. "A drains had also been attended to ifinding McCabe’s and the NgutamandWutlet. Plans for 'the erection bridge in concrete had beeniHßHfred, and the work would be pushedHCy * V Riding." —The tender °f A. IJKdlock had been accepted for the bridge filling (No. 2) on Matainata road, and the work was well under way. The l oads had been, attended to wherever practicable. Concrete pipes had been JEorwarded for the bridge on Turnbull's flat, and the work would be expediated. The sanding of Itae’s road had been done as arranged by Cr Manuel and himself.
Waitoa Riding, —The work on No. 4 road drain is well on. He recommended that £SO be authorised for No. 8 road. He had not yet been able to go on with Nos. 4,8, and 9 roads, as the riding member and himself had not yet been over them. He had communicated with the Ohinemuri Council re opening end of No. 1.
Walton Riding.— He- had not yet been able to get the services of a suitable surface man. The Valley road bridge would be gone on w.th us soon as possible Te A roil a Riding. —Tenders had-been called for cutting down Wairakau hill, A temporary br.dge had been erected at Carroll s. and preparations were being mace to put in a concrete culvert. ■ At Newsome’s creek, the Chairman and Crs Brady and Bellamy had inspected, and decided to open up the creek leading to the nbw bridge and block up the old creek. The work had been done satisfactorily. Eipht concrete pipes 'had been supplied to the Tauhei road and were chargeable to the Tauhei bridgo loan account, £G 1G«. Also ten to TuinbuU’s flat bridge, chargeable to the Morrinsville riding account. , CONTRACT PROGRESS. Moßrinsville Riding. —Contracts in this /xidiu/ have made satisfactory progress during the month. The Tauhei rja'fl contracts are now nearly completed and vast improvements have been carried out on this road and if the grades could now be metalled a permanent -job would be made. There are some >few grades still to be improved before the road is properly graded. The Tahuua road contracts have proceeded somewhat slowly. Contract No 4G is nearing completion, while No. 47 has just been Started, hut if the weather is suitable this contract will not take long to complete. Horrell’s bridge filling has made slow progress, but good work has been carried out j if the weather is suitable, about two more weeks should see it nearly The Avenue road gravelling is dow completed at a total cost of £42 5s 4d, and as the half of this amount is chargeable to the Morrinsville Town Board, £2l 2s Bd, suggest the account tp submitted for payment, Tb p re is also half of surfaceman’s time to be treated in a like manner. This is for works carried out in spreading the gravel and trimming up same, both Avenue and Quarry roads. These amounts are designated on vouchers submitted for payment to-day covering men’s wages, Gravelling the Piako hill is now completed and a good job Ir-s been made. The Piako-Kereone Bridge contract has been again delayed through ungovernable circumstances, and arrangements have been made whereby the late contractor’s sen has guaranteed to complete the work. The work has again been resumed and is proceeding satisfactorily. Motuni&oho No. 2 bridge filling contract? fias made good progress and is now taking the new bridge. Chapman’s road contract and the B’obmond Downs grading contract ar c luivitkjfi very unsatisfactory condition ctrifd stefSKhould be taken to complete tfete wo rip at the contractors’ expense, rfiei-e i»vstill plenty of funds in hand to complete the works, and I recommend that these contract Vi be notified to that e fleet. Waitoa Biding. —The Waitoa Estate contracts are all nearing a state of completion and good work is being carried out. The drain cleaning contracts will prove of immense benefit to the roads this winter, and this should tend to make travelling for the settlers in this locality much better than in previous winters. Waihou Riding.— All the sanding contracts have been completed in this riding and good work has been carried out. The grading contract on tbp Pjranfli hill £n ro.ad has been completed, ut final payment has not yet been put
in, The Government grant for this road of £IOO, should be applied for. ! Manawaru Riding.—Contracts in this riding'have proceeded in a satisfactory manner. Baker’s road bridge : Filling up of the approaches is completed and now sanded. Te Akoha Riding. - Thompson’s Track works are now completed with Iho of putting in a set of concrete pipes. This work will be attended to as as pipes are made at the Wairakau Monroe’s Hill oontraot is proceding; .satisfactorily and should be in about another week. \ requirements.
Tc Arolitt Riding,—When contracts
for grading Munro’s Hill and the Wairakau Hill are completed, I recommend that they be gravelled at once, and suggest this work be left in the hands of the riding members and myself to attend to. Morrinsville Riding—Piako Kereone Bridge. When this bridge is completed I recommend that it be given two coats of hematite and oil paint. Cost about £3O.
Waitoa Riding.—Works in connection with the further formation on the roads oil this block should be got ready so as to make an early start in the spring. This should not apply to roads that the Drainage Board are seeking to take over from the Council.
Waihou Biding.—Seddon’s road drain. There is an outlet drain used for a portion of this road’s drainage through Goodfellow’s property, and as Goodfellow is prepared to stand half the cost of cleaning up the same I think it would be wise to have the work done. Cost'about £2 12s od.
Manawaru Riding.—Waiata Road side draiui About 200 chains oi the WaltonKiwitahi road, should be taken in hand, and plans prepared so as to make an early start with the work when weather is suitable.
