LOCAL AND GENERAL.

At a meeting of the Goldfields’ Druids, Ci mmittee, held at Paeroa, it was decided to run a special train fro n Waihi, picking up passengers en route to Thames, on Saturday, 19th inst„ on which day the football match between Auckland and Goldfields Druids will be played at the Thames.

Messrs Mackie and Sons, having started business as auctioneers and general dealers, invite the public to inspect their stock of household requirements, etc. The firm will be found at “ The Mart,” opposite the Bank of New Zealand.

Mr Jno. Rowe has recently made several improvements in his B icon Factory, and it is now one of tho best outside of Auckland.

The various estates adjoining thi- district which were . subdivided a few years ago, present altogether a different appearance at the pesent tide. The innumerable small farms and neat little homesteads go to prove that we have some excellent land in the valley. After the land is properly drained, almost anything can be grown on it. At the conclusion of the service in St. Mark’s Church on Sunday evening, the Vicar and Choir met in the Vestry. On behalf of the Choir, Mr W. Maingay presented Mr E. O. Nash (on the eve of his approaching marriage) with a very seiviceable wicker arm-chair. The Rev. P. Cleary also spoke a few words regarding the excellent work done by Mr Nash as choirmaster. The recipient suitably replied. At “ Ivan hoe ” boarding house the other evening, Mrs W, Newsham, on behalf of herself and the boarders, presented Mr Nash with a silver hot-water kettle, suitably engraved, and also a silver cake fork. Mr Nash thanked Mrs Newsham and his fellow boarders for their handsome gift.

Mr. Chris. Cornthwaite, of the Waihi Company’s battery met with a painful accident the other day. He was pouring out some boiling zinc when it splashed up into fiis face and on to his arms. Mr. Cornthwaite’s eyes are much swollen as a result of inflammation which set in. He also received some nasty burns to one of his arms.

The pruning knife, which has been applied to several Government Departments already has reached the Tourist Department. A number of clerks cmployed in the Wellington office have received notice that their services would not be rebuired after a given date.
