Hungahunga Drainage Board.
Tiie usual monthly meeting of (he above Board took place in the Secretary’s Office, Boudnry-streeb, last Saturday morning. Present : Messrs Hanna (Chairman), Wagliom, Franks, Me gill, Minutes read and confirmed. Inward and outward correspondence dealt with. , —Waitoa Willows Mr W. 11. Herries, M.P., wrote acknowledging receipt of letter of 10th covering petition to Minister for Lands re subsidy towards the willows along the river banks nuisance. Diagonal Road — A letter was read from the Clerk of the Piako County Council, enclosing a copy of the petition to be forwarded to the Government, making application fur a grant of £1,400 for the opening up of the unformed portion of the Diagonal Road, which runs through the Hungahunga Block. The Council asked for the Co-operation of the Diaiuage Board in this appeal. The petition, goes on to state : —This road is of very great importance to the public, being, the connecting road between tho Tnuranga and Waikato Counties as shown on the plan. The settlers in this part of the County, as well as in the Tnuranga and Waikato Counties, complain that they have no through road for their stock, and frequently requests have been sent to this Council asking that the road be formed. There are also a large number of settlers along the line of road, who have petitioned Council at various times to have something done towards the opening of the road. The portion of the road that requires to be made, and for which this Council requests your favourable consideration is the portion marked red on the plan, the other portions being already formed. The portion referred to is over a swamp, which is now fairly drained, owiDg to the Hungahunga Drainage Board having opened up the outlets, and although the outlets are not yet quite sufficient to drain the road at present, they will be when the Board has completed its operarions. The cost of construction of the unformed portion of this road is estimated by the County Supervisor at £l,lOO, a sum far in excess of any amount that could be appropriated out of the estimated revenue at the disposal of the Council, and in view of the groat benefit that wor’d be derived by the adjoining Counties as well as this one. —No. 2 Road Drain —
P. Gilchrist, solicitor, wrote as follows, on behalf of the Piako C aunty Council : —Re your No. 2 Drain emptying into the road drain at Cochrane’s —I am instructed by the Piako County Council to intimate that its offer made herein must cither be accepted or rejected. In the latter event the Council has decided to take the matter into Court, as the present state of affairs, doing damage to the road cannot be allowed to conlinue. I trust the matter may be settled amicably, but otherwise proceedings will be taken. The Chaiiman said something ought to he done in the matter—Resolved on the tmation of Mr Orr that the Board accept subsidy of “ thirds ” and proceed with the work at once.
