(Some time ago the Auckland Dairymen’s Association promoted en essay contest, the subject chosen being “ Winter Dairying,” and the papers were submitted to Mr D. Cuddie, Dairy Commissioner, who has now made his report. The papers, he states, were, carefully read over and compared for merit by Mr (Singleton an 1 himself, and the paper written by Mr A. Scobie, of Whangarei Dairy Factory, was award* d first honours, while Mr P. Craig, of Paeroa, and Miss F. McDonald, of Okiti, tied for secord prize. The Commissioner, as the subject is such an important one, recommends that it should Ire set again for this year’s competition. What should prove to bo of interest to potato growers in this district is the introduction to New Zealand of a variety reported to be absolutely bight proof. To Mr George Robertson, of Wellington, is due the credit of introducing tho “ Solauiun Commersoni ” into New Zealand. The new potato hails from Franco and has been successfully grown in the North Island thi3 season. It is stated that while other potatoes were attacked by both wire worms and blight the Solatium Commersoni, which had been plauted amongst other tubers, effectively resisted both. The educational system of Denmark is so perfect and popular that throughout the entire couutry there is not one illiterate family. | At tLe la t meeting of the Coromandel C unty Council a letter was read from Mr A. Bruce, Town Clerk at Thames, suggesting that as the whole of the local bodies concerned have agreed as to the desirableness of Coromandel becoming a separate Charitable Aid district, the 1 Coromandel County Council should promote a local Bill to give; effect to the desired change. It was:decided to instruct the solicitor to proceed with the local Bid. The contractors for tho erection of a new butter factory at Paeroa (Messrs Lye and (Sons, of Auckland) have made a start with the work. It is expected that tho work will be completed in about three months.

It was decided to ask for particidars of the proposed exhibit. At the Hamilton Borough Cournil meeting it was resolved on the motion of Cr. Bettley that a recommendation he made to the Municipal Conference to have the present system of voting at municipal elections amended so that the old system of " crossing out ” be reverted to.

Mackie and Sons having decided to launch out iu this direction, Mr Mackie and his sons are well-known and should meet with every success.
