The many friends of Mr H. Osborne, of Manawarn, will be pleased to learn that he is making good progress at the Waihi Hospital. Over ICO men, the ruajori y with wives and families, have recently received their dismissal tickets from the Addington railway workshops. That piece of land known as “ Edwards’ Paddocks ” will bo thrown open for selection this morning. Doubtless the sect’ons will be eagerly snapped up.
A correspondent suggests that a Debating Society be formed in Te Aroha The suggestion is indeed a wise one, and we would like to see the matter taken up. At present there are far too many lads and lassies wand-ring aimlessly about, our streets after nightfall. The Paeroa Fire Brigade held a most successful Social and Euchre tournameut on Fiiday evening last. Fireman Walker who represented the Te Aroha Brigade at the function, was successful in winning the second prize after playing off with another for first place At tie Piako Council meeting yesterday the Chairman Slid too much time and money of the Council was taken in fr linage The settlers appeared to forget (hat the Council had to att‘-nd to the roads, not the drainage of p -ople’s property. It wa3 drains, drains, drains, it would be better to wipe out all the Drainage Boards and do the whole blessed work. A miner named Chas. McKeown fell down the Queen of Beauty shaft, Thames, on Saturday, He was working about GO feet from the bottom of the shaft when he slipped. He is knocked about on the head and faee, but so far as ascertained no limbs ere broken. One side of bis face and one eye is seriously injtired. Many of those who visited the Recreation Grounds on Saturday afternoon, were much annoyed at the lateness at which tho match started, in fact some of those who had paid for admission, left before the kick-off. The game was timed to start at 3 o’clock but it bad gone 3.39 before the ball was sot in motion. This is not the way to encourage spectators. If 3 o’clock is too soon, let the Union lix tho starting lime at 3.30, but let the game start at the fixed time.
