Waitoa Drainage Board
SPECIAL MEETING A srEOlALmeeting of the Waitoa Drainage Board took place in the Palace Hotel yesterday afternoon, when there were present Messrs Matthew Henry (chairman), Magill, Bellamy, and Mathieson (acting secretary). Applications for Secretary were dealt with, and after considerable discussiou Mr Campbell was selected. Many arguments were used by Messrs Magill and Bellamy in favour of Mr Abbey, but the advantages in favour of Mr Campbell carried the day. The question of finance was raised among others, and the Chairman said he was willing even to put it t > a meeting of the settlers, and if they were not in favour he would pay the extra £9. It was decided to appoint Mr Campbell as secretary. Mr Porritt’s office to be the office of the Board and the second Wednes ay iu each mouth the day of meeting. The Chairman reporte I on his meeting with the Piako County Council the daybefore.
Proposed by the Chairman that the Board apply to the Minister under Sec. 6a Land Drainage Act, If 08. lor an Orderin Council vesting the drains known as main outlet drains No. 1 and 7 road drains in the Board, such order to set out our authority over such drains and general conditions! on which the Board takes charge, and the Ohinemuri and Piako County Councils be notified of our intention of taking over ooutrol of main outlet drains Nos. 1 and 7- road drains, and that they have m plied under Sec. 64 Drainage Act, 1908, for an order vesting control of these drains in the Board.— Secondei I by Mr Muthieson and carried.
There were other and triviil matters discussed inor>) or less peisonal of no interest to the public, especially on a certain petition supposed to be circulated asking the Piako County Council to terminate certain contracts.
Mr Magill spoke very strongly ou the good work th o Piako County Council had done and intended to do, and the way they had fought for the best interests of the Waitoa settlers, and instead of the Board being antagonistic the opposite should prevail in the iuteiests of all concerned.
Proposed by Mr Mathieson that the Chairman be authoi bed to consul# a solicitor on matters connected with the Board’s business when necessary, —Carried,
