Snagging the Waitoa.

PETITION TO MINISTER OF LANDS

A PETITION is in course of signature from the Matainata, Piako, and Ohinemuri County Councils, and ihe Hungahunga and Waitoa Drainage Boards, praying as follows

“That it is very important that the said river should be snagged, thus pro viding an efficient outlet for the waters of a very extensive area of fertile land. “ That such snagging will also recla’in some thousands of acres along the course of the river, which under tbe existing congested state thereof are unduhted for about six months of the year. “ That each year will add to the cost of doing this important work, owing to the tremendous footing the willows have attained throughout nearly the entire length of the river. “That the length of the river from its confluence with the waters of the Piako to Matamata is 2,400 chains, and the approximate cost of snagging will be about £1 per chain, making a total of £2,400.

“ That your petitioner ask that a grant for this very important work to the amount of £2,400 should be made.
