St. Mark’s Sunday School Picnic.

St. Mark’s Sunday School held their annual picnic at Morrinsville on Saturday last. The school, numbering between ninety and one hundred children, scholars and teachers, with a number of friends left Te Aroha by the twenty past seven train. On arrival at Morrinsville the party partook of breakfast in the pleasant paddock lent for the occasion by Mr Henry Clifford. In the cool of the morning this repast was much enjoyed. The School was joined by the children and friends of Bt. Matthew’s Sunday School Morrinsville.

After lunch the sports were held, in which children of both schools competed for prizes and secured trophies, being allowed to make their choice from the pretty selection offered. One scene was rather amusing. The ladies who were holding the rope had turned to settle some small point of dispute when the cry arose “ They’re coming !*’ The starter at the other end of the course had given the word and the whole of maidens were tearing up the paddock full pelt. The holders of the rope seized the ends just in time to be ready for the breathless runners. The lady teachers had charge of the sports for the girls, while the Vicar, (Rev. P. Cleary), and the Superintendent (Mr J. E. Wild), took charge of the boys’ part of the programme.

A very pleasant time was spent, and after partaking of a good tea the party returned to town by the “ Wild Cat,” having chartered two carriages for their use.
