Willows on Thames River.
Some time ago Mr Breakell, engineer in charge of the drainage works at Piako, was sent to Paeroa by the Lands Department (at the request of the Ohinemuri County Council) to rep art on the best means of clearing the willows from the river. As time went on, and no mention was made of the report, the Ohinemuri County Council wrote to the Minister for Mines (Hon. Jas. McGowan) asking to be furnished with a copy of the report. The Minister’s reply, which was read at Friday’s meeting of the Council was as follows “ The report by Mr Breaknell to Lands Department on the obstructions to Thames and Ohinemuri Rivers is not for general information. I regret therefore that your request for a copy cannot be complied with. The proposals are under consideration.” Mr Strange said they would write to the Minister for Mines and again ask for a copy of Mr Breaknell’s report. If the Government would not give them a copy of the report, they should be asked if they were going to sperd the grant themselves, and if so they should be urged to go on with the work at once. He moved to that effect.
