“NO-LICENSE LECTURES.”

To the Editor,

Sir, - Under the above title there appears in the News of November oth, a coarse, abusive and untruthful letter. The writer tells us that No-License lecturers do the cause no good. Indeed ! He must be ignorant of the history of the Temperance movement in New Zealand. The writer, who signs himself “ Disgusted,” refers to the “ same old ” yarns, figures, mis-statements, cant, and humbug, etc. Let us tell “ Disgusted ” that there is no need for much repetition of the yarns, figures, mis-statements, cant, and hnmbug. The continuance of the traffic in liquor is continually giving fresh examples of its fruits. The figures given by No-License speakers are from official sources. The mis-statements are principally on the side of license, the supporters of which publish “ patriotic . letters” and misuse the name and porirfUt of General Booth. The cant is uttered by those who denounce NoLicense as productive of sly-grog, but shut their eyes to the fact of there being more sly-grog selling under License than under No-License. The humbug is practised by those who write letters ostensibly in favour of neither party, but in reality to aid the cause of license. As for Disgusted’s remark’s about “ the army o ( parasites that are fattening on the cause of temperance,” they are simply untrue. Paid agents the No-Lieense certainly does possess. £ls per jwoek agents the No-License party certainly does not possess. So “New Zealand is getting sick of the whole business.” Wait for another fortnight, “Disgusted,” and . you will see. I am sorry, Mr Editor, to write so plainly, but such writers as “Disgusted” require plainness of speech.—l am, etc Disgust, d No. 2.
