Election Notes.
Tfrin young people of New Zealand are as good as those of any other country,” said Mr Lawry, -in his address to the electors of Parnell last evening, *• and especially the girls. (Laughter.) I cannot understand the young man who would not far rather select his wife from amongst the girls of this country. ( Audible chuckles.) Compare them with the girls at Home—cross-eyed, screwed up, consumptive daughters of fashion and idleness, and no more fit to follow up woman’s occupation of matrininny and her duty of maternity, than an unsophisticated pullet to scratch worms for a family of 13 chickens. (Laughter.) The following regulations might have been necessary if the “ gag” clause had become law in the Second Ballot Act: — 1. —No candidate is to appear in the streets except (a) in uniform approved by the Chief Rabbit Inspector for the district. The uniform must be plainly marked with the le ter “ C ”( meaning “ candidate ” for Parliament) ; and with a broad arrow on some conspicuous part of his person; and he must be furnished with a muzzle and dog chains of such size and pattern as the Govornor-in-Council may prescribe. 2. —Any condidate speaking to more than one elector except in the presence of a police constable, Justice of the Peace, Rabbit Inspector, shall be deemed an idle and disorderly person, and is liable to any term of imprisonment, not being less than six mouths.—(Signed) J. G. Findlay, Minister of Internal Affairs. “ God Save the King.” The above, it may be remarked, are typical regulations drawn up by Mr A. E. Atkinson as the sort of thing that might have been expected under the second Ballot Bill as it at first passed the House. Evening Post.
