Opening of Tennis Season at Waitoa.

Ox Wednesday . afternoon, taking advantage of the ideal weather, a number of Te Aroha enthusiasts journeyed over to Waitoa, in one of Messrs Johnson and Gwillim’s brakes, to be present at the opening of the Tennis Season. On arx-ival at Waitoa the party were met by members of the Club and conducted to the grounds, which are very nicely situated in a sheltered spot on Messrs Farrers’ property. Ihe Waitoa Club being only a young one, and consequently not very financial, has been very pleased to accept, through the kindness of Messrs Farrer, the use of their private court. There were representatives from Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Waiata and Waihou present, making a total witli the local players of over 60 persons. At 3 p.m punctually, Mr C. Maclean, vice president, (in the absence of the President, Mr S, Bellamy) in a happy little speech welcomed the visitors, and in declaring the court open for play hoped that the same ideal weather conditions and good feeling would prevail whenever interclub matches were played, and that they would all win. He then called cm Mrs Maclean to serve the first ball. Friendly games were played until the adjournment for afternoon tea, when the Waitoa ladies sustained their reputation for hospitality. The energetic Secretary, Mr M. Maclean,'was most attentive and he was ably assisted by all the members of the Chib. We noticed some very promising young players among the Waitoa members and with a little practice they should give a good account of themselves this season. The following games were played : Mrs Seville and Mr Gummcr v. Miss A. Taylor and Mr R. Farrer, 6 —5. Miss W. Scherer and Mr J. Farrer v. Miss A. Scherer and Mr A. Farrer, 4 —6.

Miss J. Voysey and Mrs Lusby v. Miss N. Voysey and Miss Hunt, 5—6. Mr Buyers and Miss C. Brownlee v. Mr Atkinson and Miss A. Brownlee, I—-1. Mr Kimber, jui.r., and Mbs Gavin v. Mr F. A. Harris and Miss Stewart, 1—4.. Miss Manuel and Mr B. Larney v, Mrs Lnync and Mr Kimber, senr. 5 —6.

Mrs Brayshaw and Mr F. W. Harris v. Miss Harris and Mr Brayshaw, G —2. Mr P. Scherer and Miss Stanley v. MiGray and Miss Ileathcote, l—s. Messrs Marshall and M. Maclean v. Messrs Davey and F. A. Harris, 4—4. After giving three hearty cheers for Waitoa, which were responded to, the To Arolia contingent left for home and after a most enjoyable drive arrived in To Arolia shortly after G p,m., well pleased with their day’s outing.
