BILLIARDS.
Mu O’Neill’s billiard saloon was the j scene of some scientific play on Monday evening last, when Mr Gray and his six-teen-year-old son George, of Australia, both experts with the cue, gave exhibitions of their skilfulness. The room was well-filled, about GO being present, including His Worship the Mayor. The first display was a game of 300-up between Master Geo. Gray and Mr Julian, of Hamilton. Mr Julian led off with a safe break-up, after which young Gray played a shot which brought the balls into position, from which he made a break of Id), most of the scores being losing hazards of the red ball into the centre and top pockets. Then the play continued, Mr Julian making breaks of 24 12, 10, 13, 25 and George Gray making other breaks of 29, 59, 121, 20, 33. The game concluded with the scores Mr Julian 32G, George Gray 500. The game occupied lhr 3min. Among the skilful shots played by Gray was a stab back off the red into the pocket when his ball was in the jaws and the object ball 17 inches away. After an interval of 15 min., the play was con- , tinued in a game of 300 up, between Mr Harry Gray and Bert O’Neill, the former giving O’Neill 150 points on. . Mr H. Gray plays more of an all round game than his son, playing some very pretty cushion cannons, his breaks were 42, 35, 29, 21, 40, 83, winning by 81 points. After another short interval Mr ±i. Gray and his son gave an exhibition of skilful, instructive and amusing trick shots. Everyone went away more than satisfied with the Gray Combinations Entertainment. The Masse shot was one of the most skilful of George Gray’s shots. It is. a canon played when the three balls are in line with the striker’s ball on the outside. The striker’s ball is stabbed with the cue in a horizontal position, and the ball curves round the centre ball and gets a cannon.
