Matamata Notes.

—The Weather— The rain set in on Friday and was most opportune, as most of the settlers have their crops in. - —Our Progress— , The- township is going ahead, Mr Abbott intends to enlarge his shop so as to be able to cope with the times. Mr T. Morgan has under erection a large shop, which is to be used by Mr Gahagan, as the shop he is in is far too small for his large display of drapery and millinery. Mr Morgan, is also installing the acetelene gas into his shops. Ms Williams has opened a fruit, vegetable, and fish shop, which was .wanted in the place. Mr Smith is also erecting a large dwelling next to his store. Tennis — The Tennis Club have erected a fence about 9 feet high at both ends of their Court, and the Club is increasing in numbers and they have every o having a good result from this season, as I hear they arrange matches with Te Aroha, Waialo, Waihou, and other places. The opening day has been fixed for Saturday the 10th inst. —Station MasterRumour has it that a station-master is to be placed here. It will doubtless prove satisfactory to the settlers. We also require an up-to-date Post Office, would do a lot of good for the district, as the postal business has increased a great deal. —Convalesent— I am pleased to hear that Mrs Ei 0. Banks is able to get about again after a very bad illness. She intends to have, a long holiday. —Transferred — Mr O’Connell, of the Railway Departrhent is leaving here, having been moved to Waitoa. He will be greatly missed. Both Mr and Mrs O’Connell have worked hard for the Presbyterian Church, during the two years they have in the district. Mr O’Connell has held a place on the Church Committee, was also Secretary to the Choir and to the St. Andrews Gentlemen’s Guild, Mrs O’Connell being Treasurer for the Ladies’ Guild.

—Oddfellows’ Social—

There is to be a grand social here, under the auspices of the Oddfellows Lodge on Friday the 9th October. The Secretary Mr B. Baugh is working very hard to make it a success, which no doubt it will be, as anything Ben goes in for moves ahead. We hope to have a real good time on Friday night.
