Dudley, builder, sent in applications for permits (and enclosed plans) for erecting a boarding-house for Mrs Clousen, and a workroom for Mr J. M. Bell. The permits were granted. — w ection Bought The transfer of section 128 from Quilter to the Borough of To Aroha was duly signed and sealed. —Dominion Day Telegrams and letters were road and received from the Premier’s office re Dominion Day. —Stone Crusher —
A number of replies were received re purchasing a stone crusher, but nothing definite was done.
—Traffic Bridge Loan — A good deal of trouble was experienced in securing advance payments in connecwith the Bridge-street loan. —Reports Foreman Pilkington forwarded his monthly report as to work done during the interim. The Electrician (Mr A. T. Crosher), reported that the electric light had run without trouble during the month. The foundations at the power-house are now completed and ready for the machinery. Sample instruments for checking the consumption of current in private houses have arrived and are ready for use. —An Insanitary Spot The District Health Officer (B. A. Franklin) reported that when last in Te Aroha he inspected the sewer and stormwater outlet at the foot of Kenrick-street. He pointed out that the storm water drain that receives the waste water from Kenriek, Bridge, Whitaker, and Burgess street discharges on to a vacant section. As the drain receives the discharges from stables, fowl-yards, bacon factory, etc., it is necessary that this drain should be attended to, so as to connect with the open drain that comes down Ken-rick-street and empties into the river. This could be done at very little cost, and would obviate tho nuisance now existing there. The open drain that goes down Kenrick-street should receive better attention and should be cleaned out once a week, as it is very close to one of the main roads, and there are houses very near to this drain.” Letters were also received from Messrs McCall and Brenan re the insanitary state of drains in this locality. Or Hubbard said there was not the slightest doubt about about the drain being a nuisance and a menace to public health. He moved that the cost of improving the present condition of affairs be ascertained, so that Council will be made acquainted with what has to be done, as sooner or later the work must be faced. Although nothing can be done right away, it ivill show that vve intend to deal with the nuisance in a business like way. There is no use shelving it. Cr Jackson was of the same opinion and seconded Cr Hubbard’s motion.
Cr. Spence moved an amendment that the matter be deferred until a later date. Seconded by Cr. Rowe and carried. Crs. Hubbard and Jackson dissenting.
—Fire Brigade Station — It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Hubbard, seconded by Cr. Devey that tenders be called returnable at next meeting, for the erection of a Fire Brigade shed, on section voluntary offered by Cr. Rowe, near Public Hall. - Grading Footpath— Letters were read from Sisters of Mercy and Mr C. McKinley, re grading opposite their sections. They offered no objections provided the foundations of the fences were not impaired, and that Council make concrete steps for them. —Cr. Rowe was against putting in concrete steps at all. The Council were improving the peoples’ property as it was, without going on to thenproperty to make concrete steps for them. —lt was resolved that the estimated cost be obtained and a report handed in at next meeting. —Methodist Church
