Piako County Council.
* Th® ordinary mon hly meeting of the above body was held in the Council Chambers, Whitaker Street, Te Aroha, on Monday afternoon, when there were presentCrs. Gavin (chairman), J. McCaw, T. McGloin, C. Manuel, J. Donaldson, Keeley, and W. Main. Supervisor Johnson was also in attendance. Minute# of last meeting read and confirmed. Inward and outward correspondence dealt with. Cr Ring was granted leave of absence. —Correspondence. From Treasury, _ Wellington, forwarding 6s for fees, fines, etc., collected in Warden’s office for quarter ended 30th June. From Minister for Labour, acknowledging receipt of letter of 29th ult., relative to roading and draining of the Waitoa Estate, and advising that this matter is for the Roads and Bridges Department, and that the letter has been referred thereto for consideration. From Mr H. Poland, M.P., re subject of a grant of £OOO for Waitoa Estate roads, and stating he would have much pleasure in supporting the application. Similar letters were also received from Messrs Massey and Herries, M’s.P. —Te Aroha Cottage Hospital.
The Inspector General, under date 28th August, wrote as follows: —“ I am directed by the Hon. Minister for Hospitals and Charitable Aid to acknow- I ledge the receipt of your letter of the 22nd in#t., and in reply to inform you that a sum of £1,200 was placet on the Estimates last year for the purchase of land and erection of a buildiug_ for a cottage hospital at Te Aroha. £278 was spent and the balance will again be placed upon the Estimates for the consideration of Government. — Letter received. —Waihou Goods Shed. — A reply was read from the Prime Minister’s office in regard to the desire for a new goods shed at Waihou, and stating that having conferred with the Hon. Minister for Railways in the matter, are of opinion that the traffic is not yet considered to be of sufficient volume to warrant the erection of a new building. Should the business, however, increase in the near future the subject will be again brought up for review. Cr Thomas said the Premier distinctly promised the settlers at a meeting that the goods’ shed would be erected, and the reply does not say much for him (the Premier) or the Government he represents. It was decided to again write to the Department re this matter.
—Wardville-Gordon-Waharoa Road. —
A reply was read from the Prime Minister’s office, expressing willingness to give this matter consideration when dealing with the Estimates, —Thompson’s Track,— Letters received from Messrs Herries and Poland, M’s.P., to the effect that they would work conjointly in having this road put in a satisfactory state. —Waiorongomai Tramway.—
The Solicitors for Hardy’s Mines, Ltd., acknowledged receipt of telegram from the Warden consenting to surrender of lease, aud attaching cheque for £3OO in settlement thereof,
—Te Aroha Traffic Bridge.—
It was resolved to pay account received from Borough of Te Aroha, £3OO in connection with new traffic bridge.
—Drainage Trouble. —
Letter read from Mr G. Cowley, Shaftesbury, drawing attention to drains fronting bis house. —Left in the hands of the Chairman and Supervisor to attend to.
—Hill Track, Waiorongomai.—
Complaints having been received concerning the bad state of the track leading to the Waiorongomai Mines, it was resolved on the motion of Cr Manpel, seconded by Cr Donaldson, it was resolved to spend £qo thereon. —Stanley Culvert. —
In response to a letter received from Mr B. Montague, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr McCaw, that a few loads of gravel be placed over the hill on either side of Stanley culvert. —Legal Advice. —
The Clerk was instructed to seek the advice of Mr Gilchrist when necessary.
—Yerandah Wanted. —
Permission >yas granted Mrs L. M. Morgan, Mataujata, to erect a verandah over her shop at Matamata. —Hughes’ Road. —
A letter was received from Mr J. W. Johnson, re closing the above road, and Stating that it was a great hardship to thosc owning sections fronting this road, and trusting Council would take prompt measurreß to re-open same. —Cr Thomas said he understood that Mr Farmer, during a recent visit to Te Aroha, had stated that Mr Hughes had not paid for land used as a road, and that it was wrong of him to ask payment for it,—lt was decided that the Chairman make enquiries re this road.
—Bridgo Timber. —
Supervisor Johnson was instructed to inspect certain bridgo timber stacked at Te Aroha, and owned by Messrs Ellis and Burnand, of Hamilton. —Gravel. — Permission was granted the Taupo Totara Timber Company to take a few loads of gravel from the Councils pit. Baker’s Road Bridge. — I It was decided to call tenders for this bridge, —Richmond I)owns Roads. — Qn the motioq of Cr Manuel, seconded by Cr Thomas, it was resolved to call tenders ' for improving the present unsatisfactory condition of the l-icli-ruoqd Downs Roads, —Mr Mitchell, uffio was present, promised to pay his rates (about £200) if tho work was proceeded with at once, —Waffiou Town Belt.— Cr Thomas asked if any reply had been received respecting the above, lie Considered it advisable to get a sandpit, as several roads required attention, No reply having been received it was resolved that Mr Campbell be again written to.
