Compensation to Meikle.
In a letter to the New Zealand Tidies, Mr J. Jamieson, secretary to the Meikle Committee, says that in ' respect of Meikle’s claim of £i 7,000 • for wrongiul imprisonment, since the was forwarded to the late Premier, the Eight Hon. R. J. Seddon, he has had the account verified by a chartered accountant so far as the equity of Meikle’s estate was con- ; cerned, based on the Government loan value of the same prior to his ’•£ •• conviction, and the net result of the * same at 6 per cent, compound interest for twenty years with yearly rests amounts to £11,961 os 6d. Leaving out his eldest son, and add£6,ooo for false imprisonment because of the prolonged injustice and suffering, this brings the total up to facts, says Mr Jamieson, it is difficult f° see how a proposal by either Government or Parliament to give only £s> ooo to this man in full can ; be called just.
