Willows on River Banks.
Both the Waihou and Waitoa rivers are becoming ’blocked up through the growth of willows, and unless something is done very soon by the powers that be to remove them root and branch, the low lying country for miles around will suffer. At the last meeting of the Ohinemiuri County Council the following report was read from the Committee appointed to go into the matter 1. That unless willows are properly cut and removed from river, the cutting of them would be worse than useless. - >v 2. Neither settlers nor Natives are likely to do this work satisfactorily, as it would involve the. use of winches, etc., in addition'to labour.
3. That the Council undertake the work, and, as a River Board, strike a small rate to cover the cost of the work.
4. That the engineer engage a really reliable man, accustomed to bush and river work, and make Kim solely responsible for the satisfactory progress of the work, and to supply him with such number of men, and such material as he may require. When men were once engaged, the working boss to have power to remove and engage other men with the approval of engineer. 5. That- this system be given two months’ trial.
Decided that the matter be left in the hands of engineer to report on the approximate cost.
