Borough Council

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Te Aroha Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Boundary-street, last night, when there were present :—The Mayor (R. L. Somers, Esq.), Crs. Annan, Rowe, Hubbard, Spense, Jackson. Minutes read ana confirmed. Inward and outward correspondence read.

—Electric Baths—

The resident medical officer (Dr. G. G. Kenny) by direction of the General Manager of the Department, wrote, enquiring under what terms the Council would be willing to supply electric current per meter to the electric light bath. Left in the hands iof the Electric Lighting Committee and engineer. —Railway Water Supply—

The Railway Department forwarded a cheque for £2O, for water supply to working railway, Te Aroha.

—Te Aroha Traffic Bridge—

The Department of Roads advised that' a fust instalment of £SOO was available for expenditure on the bridge.

—Tui Park Reserve—

The Under-secretary of the Department of Lands, wrote, acknowledging receipt of plans, showing the additional 57f- acres which the Borough Council desire to have made part of the Tui Park Reserve. After certain formalities have been gone into the area will be gazetted as a Recreation Reserve, brought under the Dominions Act, and vested in the Borough Council. —Wattle Trees — A letter was received from Jno. White, requesting ipermission to cut down and remove the wattle trees growing on Church-street, in front of his property. Cr Hubbard said the trees were not doing any harm, and it wauld be a great pity to destroy them, as they were very pretty. All he (White) wunted was the firewood, and his reason given was ODly on excuse.—Cr Spense said, as one of the Works Committee he would like the Council to visit the spot. He said Mr White spoke to him re the trees, as they hid his view.—Cr Jacksbn said that sooner or later the trees would have to come down, and he thought it a good opportunity to get them cut.—Cr Rowe said he did not consider the trees were doing any harm.— Cr Jackson : If we were living behind them we might think they were.—Cr Rowe said he was against cutting trees out of streets unless they were doing harm, —On the motion of Cr Rowe seconded by Cr Annan it was left in the hands of the Works Comrnitte with power to act.—The Mayor drew attention to certain willow trees which were forcing fluming.

—Balance-sheet—

The Auditor-General returned _ the Borough balance-sheet for the year ended, diet March, 190 S, certified to as correct.

The position of Council’s finances were considered highly satisfactory. .

—Temporary Tram Line—

Jno. Murphy, contractor for the erection of the new traffic bridge, asked for permission to lay a temporary tramline through the Borough lands, Te Aroha West, from Baine’s pit to the western end of the embankment included in his contract. After the line is taken up everything will be left to the satisfaction of the Council. Mr Murphy intimated that a start would be made with the tram-line next week ; the temporary structures to carry the bridge trusses would also be started and the whole work pushed on with vigor. 1 Cr Hubbard proposed and Cr Rowe seconded that the permission asked for be graded, subject to the lessees ap\ jroval. - Carried. —National Defence League—•

Letter read from National Defence League, stating that some members contemplated visiting Te Aroha early in July, in the interest of the League, and asking the Mayor to preside at the meetings.

On the motion of Cr. Hubbard seconded by Cr. Aiman it was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Mayor and Town Clerk. —Broken Switch Board—

Stewart and Fenn, Ltd., advised that they had credited the Council in full for amount of broken switchboard panel, and requesting a settlement of their account. '

—Additional Eeservoir—

Henry H. Metcalf, in reply to Council's letter advised that he would be very pleased to undertake the construction of new reservoir, and stating that he would be in Te Aroha shortly.

—Fleet Week Banner—

It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Bowe, seconded by Cr. Annan that a 10 x 5 banner be made and forwarded to Auckland.—Left in the hands of the Finance Committee to have made.
