Ohinemuri County Council Expenditure.

We have been asked to insert the folloAving letter in the News, Avhich appeared in the correspondence columns of the Ohinemuri Gazette of Wednesday last, signed by “ Ratepayer ” : Sir,—Our County Council seems to have no limit to its reckless expenditure. The appointment of a foreman of Avorks at £3 10s a Avcek is more especially glaring in the face of the fact that all the Avork in connection Avitli the expondituio of the Government grants is finished. This appointment is also illegal, as no applications were called for the position. The engineer had an increase of £SO to his already large salary on the understanding that he Avould not require an assistant. This appointment is nothing but reckless waste of public money, more especially in the face of a very large overdraft, the interest on Avliieli far exceeds the amount derived from the rates. The cost of carrying on this Comity are as follows County clerk and assistant, £500; engineer, £350; foreman of Avorks, £182; total, £1032. This does not include the salaries of inspectoi, ranger, and pound-keeper. I ventiuo to say that no private company AVould carry on its business in the reckless way that our County is doing 1 ”
