TAXATION COMMISSIONER’S POWERS.

SYDNEY, June 16. In the Bankruptcy Court, on a test case as to the right of the Commissioner of Taxation to petition in bankruptcy for the recovery of income tax, the Court held that the Commissioner was legally entitled to take proceedings in bankruptcy.

LONDON, June 16. A Blue Book dealing with the Congo shows as the result of Sir E. Grey’s efforts Belguim promised satisfactory reforms in the Congd, including equality of trading, and as regards other stipulations and treaties. Sir E. Grey emphasised that the Congo State had not fulfilled the object for which it was originally organised, or the conditions of treaties, and described the system of taxation by labour as slavery.
