Borough Council
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Te Aroha Borough Council took place on Wednesday evening last in the Council Chambers. Present : Councillors Hubbard, Devey, Spence, Jackson End Annan. An apology was received from the Mayor for his unavoidable absence. Cr. Rowe also sent an apology. It was resolved that the apologies be accepted and that Cr. Hubbard take the chair. Minutes read and confhmed. Inward and outward correspondence read. —Refund Asked For —- It was resolved that the Clerk write to Messrs Stewart and Fenn, requesting payment of full amount for marble switchboard. —Sanitation — Letter read from R. Maokie drawing attention to certain matters near his property, and requesting that somethiugbedouo. —Resolved that the Inspector be instructed to report at next meeting. —New Bank Building— It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Annan, seconded by Cr. Jackson that the application from the Bank for permission to erect steps, footbridge, etc., be acceded to. Work to be carried out under supervision of Works Committee. —Extra Assistance — Mr Crosliier, eleotrican, applied tor extra assistance. —The Chairman pointed out that the amount of work is increasing, and that putting in the new plant, etc., would also entail more labour. —Cr. J ickson thought that request be granted, and that Mr Crosher be empowered to obtain extra assistance, and submit his recommendation to Council for approval. —Cr. Devey proposed and Cr. Annan seconded that applications be invite l by advertisement. —This was carried. —lncrease of Salaries—
It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Annan, seconded by Cr. Devey that th application of R. Willis for an increase of salary be acceeled to, viz., £lO per annum additional. The T >wn Clerk (Mr F. W. Wild) also applied for an increased remuneration. —The Chairman contended that the request was a just one ; as the amount of work had greatly increased. He really thought the Clerk deserved it, and proposed that an additional £lO per annum be granted. —Cr. Spence seconded.—Cr. Jackson proposed and Cr. Devey seconded increase be.£2o.—The Chairman witdrew his motion and Cr. Jackson’s resolution was put and carried. —Committees — The various Committees were elected as follows: —Works : Crs Hubbard and Spence Electric Light and Water-works : Crs Hubbard and Annan ; Building, Fire Brigade and Sanitary : Crs Devey and Annan ; Legal and Finance: Crs Rowe and Jackson. The Mayor to be a member of the Committees. —Deputy Mayor— Resolved on the motion of Cr Speuse, seconded by Cr Annan, and carried, that Cr Rowe be again appointed Depu'y-Mayor. —lntake Rose — Cr Jackson asked re this matter. —The Chairman said that as soon as water goes down and concrete sets, it would be attended to. —Rates — The Chairman gave notice of motion that a general rate of Is Cd in the £ and a water supply rate of 7d in the £ be struck. —lron Pipes— It was mentioned that the Turncock had lifted certain pipes in Lipsey-street and taken possession of them. —Resolved on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr Annan, that the Turncock be asked to return the pipes to the Borough yard.—Cr Spense said it would have been better to have left the pipes alone -taking them up left the paths dirty, and almost unfit for use. —Wilson Street —
The question of improving this street was considered.—Mr Spooner, on behalf of the ratepayers, pointed out the disgraceful state of road and footpath. Temporary relief was desirable. He said it took two horses to tako three bags of coal to the top of the street. — Left -with Works .Committee. —New Reservoir— Resolved on the motion of the Chairman, that the Council construct a new and larger reservoir to better conserve the town water supply, and that the same be completed before end of present year.—Decided that Mr Metcalf be asked to make the necessary plans, survey, specifications, etc., without delay, and submit same to Council. —Drainage— On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr Jackson, it was resolved that the drainage work at the back of Dr Ax ford’s be carried out as soon as possible. —Fire Brigade Station — Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, that a committee consisting of Crs. Annan, Spence, and mover be appointed to report re moving Fire Brigade Station to higher ground.
—lmprovements The notice of motion moved by Cr. Spence at last meeting (and published in News) re improvements to streets from Domain gate to Mackio’s Bridge, etc., was put and carried.
—Septic Tank — Application from News Office for pe mission to erect septic tank was received. Granted.
—Bridge Domain — Cr. Jackson proposed and Cr. Hubbard seconded that a few seats be made and placed in Pound Paddock, for convenience of persons witnessing Hockey matches, etc. Cost not to exceed £5.
—Riding on Footpaths — Cr. Devey drew attention to amount of riding on footpaths. Also coaches going round corners at other than a walking pace. 'This was all the business.
