BODY FRIGHTFULLY MUTILATED. Last night a shocking’ accident occurred on the Te Aroha crossing of the railway line on this Waihi branch, when a single man named John Barrett, aged 45 years, was absolutely cut to pieces through being run over by the train. The police were informed oh the arrival of the train at Paeroa and the stationniaster despatched an engine and a van to the scene of the accident. On arrival they found the body horribly mutilated, one hand being completely severed and lying about half a chain away. The right arm was almost completely severed, while the heart and otheir organs were distributed along the line, for a distance cf a chain and a half. During conversation with the driver, Hatcher, a Press representative was informed that he first noticed a dark object on the line, which he mistook for a dog or a calf. He was. than about eighteen feet away and. imtne* diately applied the brakes and pulled the train up in about a chain and a half. The train was running at about 20 miles an hour. From the appearance of the body it is surmised that Barrett tripped over the line and was unable to recover in time to avoid the engine. The only portion of the body which was nat mutilated was the head and face.
