WAIHOU NOTES.

Several of our settlers talk of going in for growing wheat.

A concert is to be held at Waitoa on Friday night, and a contingent of local artists are going across to render assistance with the programme. \ The roads are in good order, but I ■ would like to draw Foreman Johnson’s. attention to the necessity of patching portions -of Seddon’s road and the main road between Te Aroha and Waihou.

Most of the settlers have got their autumn grass. This is somewhat late, owing to the somewhat unsettled season. <*. j

Most of the flaxmills are closed down, pending an increase in the price of fibre. This quiescence on the part of the mills is giving the flax a chance to grow. Messrs Hutchinson Bros., of Walton, have been busily engaged chaff-cutting, during the past fortnight. The class of work turned out by them is highly spoken of by the settlers. They have a new plant throughout, including a 12-horse power oil engine.

Property is changing hands all round lately. Mr Dan Casey, of Rangiatea, has sold out some 400 acres to Messrs Jones Bros., Mir Casey’s clearing sale taking place on Thursday, when some first-calss dairy cows will be offered. Mr Casey has bought Mr Rooney’s Waihou farm of - 250 acres. Mr McKenzie, saddler, is leaving us, having disposed of his business. A start is being made with th e Waitoa Estate Roads. Tnis will doubtless be welcome news for the settlers, who would not care for a repetition of last year’s state of affairs as far as the roads are concerned. There are some 31 miles of roads, about 7 or 8 of which are within the Ohinemuri County. The work will be the cleaning up of existing drains, making provisions to carry off the wator. t •
