Te Aroha Borough Council.

The ordinary monthly maeting of the | above council was held last night at the Hot i Springs Hotel, owing to the indisposition of | the Mayor. Present: His Worship the i Mayor and Crs Jackson, Hubbard, Annan j Rowe, Spence and Devey. I The Auckland Gas Company acknowledged j the receipt of the Council’s requirements tor tar. ' .. j Mr W. Maingay interviewed the Council j in regard to the action of the Pound-ranger, . and as there were other complaints Cr Jack- j j son moved and Cr Spence seconded, that the ; services of the ranger be dispensed with. Agreed to. In regard to submitting building plans to the Council for approval.'prior to building, Mr Calder interviewed the Council in regard to his case. He said Mr Dudley, who had gone away with the plans would not be back until to-morrow. Cr Spence stated the footpath was falling away on the inner side of the section. Cr Rowe (thought they should prosecute the builder. To be left in the hands of the Building Committee. The overdraft now stands at £1,028 14s 6d, including last night’s payments. Edward Mahoney and Son, Auckland, notified the Council that they were aoout to erect new premises at the comer of Whitaker and Bridge streets for the Bank of New Zealand, and as the building is to be of brick they wished for information as to whether the present footpath is at its permanent level, and whether they could safely build to it. If it is not so, they would like the Council to fix the proper level for them as the building being of brick would make it almost impossible'’ to alter the height of the floor should the street level be altered. -Cr Hubbard suggested that they be asked to keep the floor six inches above the present footpath in case it lias to be raised, and moved to that effect. The permanent level to be six inches higher. The Clerk Hamilton Borough Council asked for information in regard to water rates struck or charges made in Te Aroha Borough. Information supplied and acknowledged. The Valuation Department, Wellington, notified the Court that they had forwarded to the Treasury a voucher for £BB 13s 2d, due to the Council under the Municipal Corporations Act. Mr If. Mackie requested the Council to repair the footpath in Burke-street, between Whitaker and King streets, where Mr Jansen resides.—Mr Mackie interviewed the Council in regard to the matter. The Works Committee stated they intended to reform this street, and asked the Council’s sanction.— Agreed to. Treasury notified that the sum of £73 13s 2d had been remitted to the credit of the Council at the Bank of New Zealand. Treasury also notified that the sum of £64 4s Id, water supply and electric energy for the Domain had "been placed to the Council’s credit; also £2 water supply to Police Station. The Railway Department, Wellington, acknowledged Council’s letter of Bth inst. in regard to accommodation at Te Aroha, and regretted that as there are a large number of important and urgent works to be undertaken in the Auckland district this year in anticipation of opening up the North Island Main Trunk line, nothing could be done in the direction of improving Te Aroha station. — Decided to write again aqd draw tho Minister’s attention to the matter.

H. Poland, Esq., M.H.R., Wellington, replied to the Council’s letter in regard to the proposed duty on electrical machinery, and stated the representations would he carefully noted by him. The Department of Roads acknowledged plans and correspondence iu regard to the Wailiou bridge at Te Aroha. H. Poland, Esq., M.H.R., acknowledged Council’s correspondence in regard to Govern- 'j ment subsidy for the Te Aroha bridge. He j would endeavour to have the subsidy reiu- , stated as it was last year. He was in favour j of asking the Government for an increased < subsidy as it would strengthen their claim for j the grant of last year.—Or Hubbard moved that they ask for £3,ooo.—Carried. The Minister for Public Works, replying to the Council’s application for a renewal of the grant made last year for the erection of the Te Aroha bridge, stated the application would he carefully considered in framing the estimates. The Foreman reported on a number of works carried out| since last meeting. He suggested that Mr Gavin be asked for permission to take metal out of stoney creek and break it there, for repairing the road to the town from the creek.—Agreed to.—Works Committee to inspect Lipsey's bridge and report. . j Cr Hubbard moved that they obtain metal j at the south-end. —Carried. | In regard to twice shifting metal, Mr | Hubbard said the metal only cost the Council j 3s a yard. The Inspector of Nuisances forwarded his monthly report. —In regard to a complaint that fowl-houses, etc., are being ..built too close to the boundary fences, the Mayor stated a new by-law would ho necessary to remedy the complaint. _ I James Salmon asked the Council to continue , the footpath in Kenrick-street from Kokuhu- | street to R ita-street. He was prepared to , pay £3 for the cost—Referred to Works : Committee. . The Turncock reporte l on the waterworks | for the month. In regard to the junction of . creeks, he recommended that the Works Com- | niittee visit the spot as slips would pi-obably, j occur if the wet weather, continued. The lid j of the dam box has been bent and knocked about through stones coming over the falls, , and the box should be shifted. In regard to , extension of mains he suggested that a three- ; inch main bo taken from Bridge-street along j Lipsoy-street to Mr Bronan’s corner anti a ; .fire-plug placed there, as the nearest fire-plug 1o Mr McColPs is 200yds away. At present there is a half-inch pipe running along this . street and four houses using it, and it would ; he better to put down a permanent main now. ; This will also make provision in case of fire in this street. The same thing also applies , to Pnriri-street.l Cr Hubbard moved that the work be attended to. The cost of pipes would be about £so.—The Council to supply material aud j call tenders for the work.
