Members of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows’ Society will be interested in learning that the armual movable com mittee meeting held this year at Folkestone, England, was attended by 652 deputies from all parts of the United Kingdom. New Zealand and other parts of the Empire were also represented by visitors, who received a hearty welcome. The week over which the meeting extends is a time of importance irf the history of the town where it taken place, and the deputies, who are accorded a public reception by the Mayor and other civic authorities, are feted without stint when not engaged with businnss. The Archbishop of Canterbury opened the meeting with the following prayer : “ Our forefathers founded the Society for the fulfilment of Thy law. that we bear one another’s burdens. Grant, we beseech Thee, that the same Holy Spirit may ever rule in the hearts of those who shall carry on and extend this Society, so that in doing that commandment they may learn to love Thee, and in the services of their brethren they may win the reward of those who serve Thee.’* According to the reports submitted, the Society, which is the largest and richest in the world, has a membership of 1,Q29,5Q5, and a capital of £12,850,000. In New Zealand, the Order was established in 1842, and, according to the latest returns, has a membership of 19,435 and a capital of over £490,000.
