INSTRUCTION IN ELEMENTARY ACRICULTURE AND NATURE STUDY.

In order to make better provision 'for the teaching of agriculture and nature study in the public schools, the Board has arranged for the instructor, Mr V. W. Jackson, 8.A., from the Guelph Agricultural College, Ontario, to give courses of lessons for the instruction of . teachers of all grades, including pupil- | teachers. The courses will include not only theoretical instruction, but also practical work in school gardens. Special teaching will be given of a kind suitable for schools in charge of female teachers. The classes will be held at Paeroa and Te Aroha. They will begin on Monday, August 26, at Te Aroha, and on Friday, August 30 at Paeroa. They will continue for a period of thirteen consecutive weeks, omitting the week of the Michaelmas holidays, and ending on Saturday, November 30th. The times and places of the classes are —- Paeroa, at the District High School, Fridays end Saturdays, from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 1.45 to 3.45 p.m. To Aroha, at the Te Aroha Publio School, Mondays and Tuesdays, from 9 to 1 2 noon, and from Ito 3 p.m. Note. —If it is found when the classes have started that the hours can be more conveniently arranged the necessary change will be made. The attendance of teachers at these classes will involve the following changes in the school days during the period named above: (1) Paeroa, the following schools, and any oth r schools in charge of teachers attending at this centre, will be closed on every Friday during the period of the course: Paeroa District High School, Karang.)hake, Hikutaia, Puriri. Wharepoa, Vaikino, Waitekauri, Komata and Netherton; (2) Te Aroha, the following schools, and any other schools in charge of teachers attending at this centre, will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during the course, but may be opened on Saturdays: Ta Aroha, Te Aroha West, Mangaiti. Elstow, Manawaru, Waiorongomai, Gordon, Waitoa and Waihou. This reduction of the number of school days during the course cannot possibly be avoided, hut teachers who attend the classes will receive all possible concession for the same, and it is believed that the ultimate benefits to be obtained will mor-3 than counterbalance any temporary disadvantage. The Board desires that all teachers within th® reach of either centre will avail themselves of this opportunity to acquire a practical knowledge of the subjects which they are called upon to teach. Bpe ial certificates will be issued to those who satisfy the Instructor by regular attendance and due progress. Free railway tickets to and from the centre will be provided under the usual conditions, but no other allowance can he made towards the cost of travelling.
