Naval Coaling Station.

WESTPORT, Thursday.

At a meeting of the Westport Chamber of Commerce on Thursday night, the following motion was carried : “ In view of the recently expressed wish of the Lords of the Admiralty to establish a properlyequipped naval coaling station in the South Pacific, this Chamber urges upon the Government the necessity for a report by an up-to-date marine engineer on the possibility of the further improvement of the harbour of Westport, the present plans now completed, being designed by an eminent engineer 30 years ago, being practically out of date owing to the enormous improvement of mechanical appliances for dealing with alluvial deposits in rivers and bar harbours.”
