Compensation Case.

CLAIM AGAINST COUNTY v COUNCIL.

A case of interest was heard at the Native Land Court this week, when the phinemuri County Council applied to the Court to declare the amount of compensation to be paid for 6 acres 16 perches at Tarariki Creek, taken under the Public Works Act for a gravel reserve. The land belonged to some natives, and was leased to P. Treanor. Mr Porrit appeared for the County C.ouncil, and Mr Moresby for Treanor and the native owners. The amount claimed as compensation was £2755. After the case had been partly heard, Mr Porritt intimated that the County Council intended to apply to the Government to have the land revested in the native owners The case , v was accordingly adjourned for six weeks to see if this could bo done, costs amounting to £l4 15s being given against the County Council. Mr Moresby intimated that his clients would claim £72 a year compensation for the years the County Council had possession of the land.
