Mangaiti Notes.

[Our own Correspondent.] The weather which has been very wet and stormy for the last few weeks, in fact ever since last January, settled into a heavy downpour on Thursday night, which soon raised the creeks bank high. The Waihou River, which soon responded, reached a very high flood mark. The S.S. Rotokobu had considerable delay at the ferry crossing, through a lot of debris being caught in the main wire, which was drawn from its position to the surface of the water. A washout occurred at the end of one of the approaches to the bridge, where the water was rushing over with great force from the eastern side of the river and the milk suppliers had great difficulties in getting over to the creamery. As Mr C. E. Mace wis endeavouring to get through, one of his horses swerved too much to one side, and this nearly upset his waggon. Mr Fred Strange, who at flood times, is always first to the rescue of our distressed milk suppliers, found on arrival at tbe creamery that there was no one from the eastern side of the river there. Fearing something had gone wrong, he started off to render assistance. The milk was transferred from the disabled waggon to Mr Strange’s waggon and reached the creamery safely. The disabled waggon being got out again after considerable difficulty. The Council are pushing on with the road te connect Tirohia and Mangaiti, and they have just let a contract which will bring the road ends to within about two and a-half miles of each other. This road will be a great advantage to people havering between Paeroa and Te Aroha, as it will do away with the Rotokohu Gorge, the hills, and the rough road between the gorge and Te Aroha.
