An old friend, the Legislative Council Election Bill (Major Steward), passed its second reading despite the opposition of the Ministry by 40 to 29. Incidently some recent appointments to the Council were severely criticised. The Premier said the Government took full responsibility for the selection. The appointees were suitable men in every way. Sir Joseph Ward stated that the Government would not enter into negotiations for the purchase of the Manawatu railway on the basis of inflated values. The country was prepared to give a fair price, but beyond a fair price, the Government would not go. In case any attempt was made to inflate the price, the Government could easily divert the traffic. The illustrations all through are of a very high class, and the firm deserve great credit for the expense and care incurred in issuing such a fine number. Copies can be obtained from the local agent Mr Wm. Dibsell.
