Some light on a past transaction of the Bank of New Zealand is thrown by a. petition presented to the House of Uepresentajtives by Mr ‘Ait-ken, from Mr Alexander Macintosh, formerly chief auditor and them general manager of the Blank, of New Zealand, and now president of the Savings Bank Commission of New .South Wales. Mr Macintosh i»ets out that .in 1898 he was appointed, chief auditor of the bank at a salary of £-1750'. It is provided by the Bank of New Zealand Share Guarantee Act tht the salary of the auditor when once fixed shall not the altered without the consent in. writing of the Colonial Treasurer. On tho ‘22nd June, 1903, petitioner, with the full concurrence of the Colonial Treasurer was persuaded to aelCept the office of general manager of the bank, <iand from that date the bank ceased to pay him his salary as chief auditor. Oh the 27th November, 1903, he tendered liis resignation of the position. of .chief auditor, but the Colonial Treasurer refused to allow him to retire. On the 4th December, 1903, the Colonial Treasurer* wrote to him stating that his resignation would be Receipted as soon a® his successor was appointed, andi on the 27th April, 1904, the Colonial Treasurer wrote stating that his successor had been appointed and that his resignation was accepted. Petitioner therefore claims the sum of £ 1 182 13s, being salary payable to him as chief auditor between the above ua.to», anct in puttjjin- -f-n-tard that claim adds that he continued to act as general manager till the 31st March, 1906, on which date, because of differences which had arisen between himself and the directors of tho bank, he felt himself compelled in his own interests to relinquish that position, lie also asks for an, enquiry into the circumstances which led to his retirement from the Her vice of the bank'.
