Dennerly, the contractor for the Mangaiti bridge, wrote asking the Council to take over the bridge. The engineer said he had arranged to tako over the bridge and to make certain deductions from the contract money for work that had not been done. Mr Hetherington said that the approaches to the bridge were not safe at present. If the Council was going to take over the bridge the necessary work on the approaches had better be done at once. Mr Poland said there was no doubt the approaches were in a very bad state, and they should be gravelled at once. The engineer said that he would attend to the matter. The lists of grants for which it was proposed to ask from the Government for works in various parts of the county amounted to £12,750. Mr Poland said they should ask for a grant of £I,OOO for the road from the Paeroa-Waitoa-road to Tahuna. On the fine of this road was a block of 6,000 acres of Crown land ready to be taken up, while the road would also give communication bet ween Paeroa and Tahuna. The fine of road had already been laid off by the Government surveyor. Mr Hetherington said that the suggested road was in the wrong place. It would take thousands and thousanls to make a road there. Mr Poland said he had been told by settlers at Tahuna that they could ride over this road eight months out of the year. Mr Hetherington : I was duck shooting over there three weeks ago. Mr Poland : Apparently Mr Hetherington doesn’t know where the road is.

Mr Hetherington said he had been over the country, and it was very swampy. Mr Poland said that parts of the land were os dry as any land in Paeroa, and had no appearance of swamp. Of course portions of the road may be low lying, Mr Marrinan said it would be best to get the money first, and afterwards decide where it wus to be spent. It was decided to ask for a grant of £IOOO for the road.
