Complimentary Social.

LIBERAL AND LABOUR FEDERATION. A very successful social was tendered to Mr H. Poland, M.H.R., on Thursday night, by the local branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation. There was a good attendance and dancing was the order of the evening. The floor was in very good order, and the music supplied by the Te Aroha Trio was of the best. Mr Sheen ably carried out the duties of M.C. An extra was played by Miss Gavin, a recitation was given by M. F. Lawry, M.H.R., and a humorous song by Mr Benny. The hall was prettily decorated for the occasion with flags. During an interval light refreshments were (provided by the ladies’ committee. Mr Gavin, president of the local branch, tendered a hearty welcome to Mr and Mrs Poland, and apologised for the attendance, and explained that there had been socials on every night this week. They were at Waihou on Wednesday night and would he at Manawaru to-morrow night. He apologised for the absonce of His Worship the Mayor, who was indisposed, and Dr. Kenny, who had a prior engagement. He asked them to give Mr Poland a hearty welcome, whioh was given. Mr ‘Poland, who was warmly greeted, returned thanks for their kind reception. He said it was evident the Te Aroha people were very sociable judging by the treatment meted out to him that night and also last year. So far it had been a great pleasure to be the representative for Te Aroha and Ohinemuri, and he was sorry that at the next election he would not be able to represent them as he would be standing for the Ohinemuri electorate. Since he had met them last year they had had a short session, with a new Ministry, and it was not to be expected that any great measures would be carried out. When the new Cabinet had been given a trial, he believed that it would prove that it thoroughly deserved the confidence of the people of the colony. Ho did not intend to touch on politics that night as they came there to enjoy themselves; he again thanked them for the kind reception they had giveu him, and hoped he would always meet the esteem in which they held him at the present time.—(Applause). The gathering broke up shortly before one o’elock, and the committee are to be complimented on the success of the evening.
