A reception is to be tendered to Sir Joseph Ward in the Wellington Town Hall on the evening of the 26th inst. The preacher at S. Mark’s on Sunday at Mattinsaud Evensong will be the Rev. A. Macdonald, Curate of S. Peter’s Hamilton. Tlie Hockey match, Aroha Ladies Club v. Waihou Ladies, to be played at Waihou yesterday, was postponed for a week owing to the inclement weather. Gus. Deans, who is employed as a trucker in Ralph’s mine, Huntly, met with an accident on Tuesday, whereby one of bis legs was broken. While pushing a truck along the uuderground road a full truck coming in the rear, pinned his leg between both skips, thus causing a very painful fracture. On being brought to the surface he was attended by Dr. Lowe.

A complimentary social is to be tendered to H Poland, M.H.R., in the Public Hall to-night by th- Te Aroha Branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation. Arrangements are well in hand, and given a fine night, there should be a large C'-owd present. The piogramme will comprise songs, musical items, short speeches and dancing.
A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening to appoint the Borough representatives on the Bridge Committee, there being present : His Worship the Mayor and Crs Rowe, Annan, Spence and Jackson. On the motion of Cr Jackson, seconded by Cr Annan, the Mayor and Crs Rowe and Spence were appointed the Borough representatives on the Bridge Committee.

At the last meeting of the Goldfields’ Union the Piako Rugby Union, which was previously affiliated to the Thames, made application for affiliation with the Goldfields’ Union, and asked when the inter-Union matches commence. Mr Bush said that be had informed the Piako Union that they might not be able to have matches against all the affiliated Unions. It was resolved that the affiliation be accepted. There was a good attendance, considering the weather at the Liberal and Labor Federation social at Waihou last night. During the evening the charter of the Waihou Branch was presented by H. Poland, who spoke for some time on the Land Bill. After supper dancing was indulged in, the music being provided by '.essrs E. Deviy (piano) aud A. C. Johnson (violin), while Mr Timmius ably officiated as M.C. Men’s heavy wool underwear nt reduced prices, also men’s ready-to-wear suits, perfect fitting, at L. Cullen’s Te Aroha.—Advt.
Rising Sun Gold Mining Company’s Mine Manager’s report for the week ending 15th June 1907 The drive on the reef south from the bottom of tho wiuze is now in a total distance of 17 ft. The reef in the face is 2ft Gin. in width, and there is a leader of about 4 inches in width coming in from the hanging wall and will junction with the reef a few feet further south. The reef still maintains its values, and gold is seen in every breaking down. We are now going to drive north on the reef from the winze to proveits value going north. I have had one man employed trenching on the surface across the line of reefs for the past week, but so far nothing of importance has been discovered. ! Mr E. Montgomery, of Waikino. was | injured whilst playing in a football ' match at Paeroa on Saturday, He is now an inmate of Nurse Weymouth’s private hospital at Waihi, and is bein r attended toby Dr. Robertson. His injury is very - serious, consisting of a fractured bre.ist- ! bone.

According to statements made at a meeting of the hospital trustees on Tues day there has lately been a large increase in the number of cases of sickness treated in the Wellington Hospital. At present Ihe patients number 279, in addition to 340 out-patients. The epidemic of scarlet fever has been responsible for a large number of the cases.

The success of the Waikato Winter Show is assured so far as number of entries go, for though the exact number will not be known for some time yet, it is calculated that they will total, between 700 and 800. Yesterday Mr R. B. Restell the secretary, with his assistant, had a very busy time, entries flowing in until’ nine o’clock, midnight striking ere everything was fixed up. At a special meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council on Monday, a letter was read from the general manager of railways, stating that the alterations to the railway line had not reduced the distance of Cambridge from Auckland to the extent of bringing it within 100 miles. Thus Cambridge residents have still to go on paying the rate on parcels as if the distance were 200 miles, and the only way to avoid this is to compel the Auckland houses to ship Cambridge goods from Newmarket. The trouble is caused because the Cambridge station is 39 chains over 100 miles from Auckland. A SUCCESSFUL MILKING MACHINE.
On the 31st January last, 525 Lawrence-Kennedy-Gillies milking plants, compris ing 544 machines, were actually at work in New Zealand. Since then over 120 more plants comprising 245 machines, have been booked for the ensuing season. A full list of purchasers’ names can bo seen on application to the agents. The above figures, also the fact that orders continue to be placed in increasing numbers speaks with no uncertain voice as regards the reliability and popularity of the “ L.K.G.” After five years’ use, this machine cen claim the unique distinction of being the first successful milking machine.
