MORRIN3VU/LE v. WAIHOU,
r lha second meeting of the above teams this season took place at Waihou on Saturday last in the ] rosence of a fair number of spectators. The day was fine and the ground in first class condition, consequently a fast game was witnessed. The maroon and golds were without the services of four of their best men, who were laid up with injuries sustained th« previous Saturday. Notwithstanding this, the game was in some quarters considered a sure thing for the Waihou team, but contrary to expectations, the blue and blacks managed to beat their opponents by two tries to one. The first defeat that the Waihou team has sustained for two seasons and the first win for the Morriusville team for a like period Mr Mettam again had charge of the whistle, and again had the unpleasant duty of ordering a player off the field for rough play. It is to be hoped that the Union will put down this sort of play with a firm hand as the ball is the right thing to kick at and not players Messrs F. Hurst aud MoSweeney looked after the Hues. The blue and blacks had the advantage in weight, consequently they secured the oval in almost every scrum, but their backs failed to make use of the advantage gained, indeed such was the case on both sides.
The blue and blacks won the toss and Waihou kicked off, and after an exchange of kicks Waihou started attacking and kept the blue and blacks busy for the first ten minutes. A lot of free kicks were given against the maroon and golds for breaches of the rules, and from one of these the blue and' blacks got a rush on, and sweeping down the field with the oval at their feet managed to get into the Waihou 25, here McGuire picked up and passed to Geddis who transferred to R. Farrow, the latter passed the leather ou to Page who wound up a good passing run by scoring in the corner. Winters failed with the kick at goal. From the kick off the ball went out at half way, and from the throw in McGuire E. and J. Farrow dribbled the ball through the opposing backs, the last named player scoring a try. Winte s made a good but unsuccessful shot at goal. From the drop out Waihou were again attacking and A. Johnston nearly got over for the maroon and golds and the whistle shortly after sounded half time.
Play in the second half was of an even nature and mostly confined to the forwards, The maroon and gold pack played with grand combination and were beating the blue and blacks for the ball, E. Timmins behiud the pack making some good openings for his backs, who failed to make the most of the chances as Geddis and Page were always handy ! and stopped a lot of rushes in good style. Nothing of note however, occurred until near the end, when W. Allison got over the line and scored for Waihou, J. Timmins failing with the kick. A minute or two after J. Timmins secured a mark in front of the goal, but failed to improve the score, and Ihe whistle immediately sounding time, leaving Morrins> ville victors by six points to three. Notes : For Waihou the most promi nent in the backs were J. and E. Timmins, A- Johnston, and J. O’Grady. The last named player is always neglected by his comrades and has always to make his own opening. The veteran B. Johnston, donned the jersey again and notwithstanding his greeneso, played fairly well. Collins played veil r r\ the wing while Comerford, Rooney, and R. McCabe were the pick of the pack. For Moriinsville Gall at full-back was fair, but made the mistake of kicking at a rolling ball. Page again played his usual good game, fielding and kicking well. Geddis and R. Farrow also played a fair gamp. Winters (captain) worked his team well and played well at wing forward. W. Hogg was easily forward on the grouncj and was ably assisted by J. and E. Farpow. On Saturday text Morrinsville. meet Te Aroha at Te Aroha, a close and interesting game is looked forward to. The following will represent Te Aroha: —- Full-back : P. Hogan Tfireequarters : Acorn Hogan McPike Five-eighths: Puhu Half: Shaw Wings: Wilson McKee Forwards; Harrison Cribb McSweeney Jennings Everitt WAIHOU 11. Y. TE AROHA 11. This match was played at Te Aroha and resulted in a draw, neither side scoring.
Waihou and Te Aroha schools combined v. Morrinsville school. This match took place at Morrinsville and resulted in a win for Morrinsville by nine points to three.
