Te Aroha Agricultural and Horticultural Association.
ANNUAL MEETING,
The adjourned annual meeting was held on Saturday night, there being a fair attendance of members, the president Mr Thomas Bellamy, occupying the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary apologised for his nonattendance last Saturday night, which was unavoidable. The ollowing was the annual report: “ Your committee have to report that since the last annual meeting Mr F. Wild, who has successfully carried on the secretaryship of the Association for several seasons, felt obliged to resign on account of his other duties, and Mr T. F. Holt was appointed to the position. A short time before the annual show sev. ral members of the committee canvassed the borough of Te Aroha and the surrounding district for contributions to the prize fund, and met with good support. The entries for the Show gave promise of a very successful meeting, but unfortunately the show day turned out very wet and boisterous, and it was found necessary to postpone the Show. The result was that on the following day, when the Show was held, many intending exhibitors were unable to bring in their exhibits, and the attendance of the public was much less than it would otherwise have been, anl the revenue was thereby seriously affected. At a meeting of the general committee held during the week after the Show, it was decided to appoint a sub-committee to look into finance matters, and settle whether the rule authorising a reduction in the prize money should be applied. The committee (Messrs T. Gavin, T. Bellamv and the Secretary) met on February 27th, and decided that a redu ;t?on of 25 per cent, should be made on all Society prizes. The statement of the receipts and expenditure show that when all subscriptions considered to be good are paid in, there will be enough to pay off all outstanding liabilities for prize money and accounts.
The thanks of the Society are due to the gentlemen who acted as judges at the Show, and to those who assisted as stewards and in other capacities in carrying out the programme laid down. On the motion of Mr Strange, seconded by Mr Cooper, the report was adopted. The Department of Agriculture wrote stating that owing to a misunder tand ing they were unable to exhibit at the Show, but hoped to do so next year.— Received. A general discussion took place in regard to a complaint against a railway official at Show-time. Mr Strange thought the mention of the matter in the“ Mail,” and correspondence from a member to be very illadvised. —(Hear hoar). The president also spoke in regard to the matter. The complaint was not a personal one, it was from the Society as a whole. Mr Strange said that from that time no complaint had been made in regard to the official. Mr Thomas thought they ought to give the “ Mail ” a wrap over the knuckles. The appointment of officers for the ensuing season was then proc with : Patrons, W. H. Herries, Esq., and H. Poland, Esq., M’s.H.R., and Mr W. G. Allen; president, Mr Thomas Bellamy. In proposing that Mr Bellamy be re - elected, Mr Cooper said it had been a year of hard work and very little thanks. They had been very unfortunate with regard to the weather, and he would like to see them have a very successful Show next year. Mr Strange, in seconding the motion, said they could not get anyone to work harder for the Society. —(Hear, hear). The motion was earned unanimously.
The President, in thanking them for re-electing him, said he did not think he could -work any harder than he did last year. He was very pleased at the manaer in which the people responded to the Show. Messrs J, B. Thomas and J. McSweeney were elected vice presidents. Messrs Goodfellow W. Hetherington, Glasson, Bellamy, Finlay, Grant, Larney, Bowe and Thomas were appointed as the stock committee; horticultural committee, Messrs Mclnman, H. Ross, Borrie, Taylor, Cooper, Spooner, Gavin and Driver; treasurer, Mr J. Rowe ; secretary—Mr Holt, the present secretary, said he would be unable to spare the time, and he wished to resign. It was decided to adjourn the meetingl for a month. j On the motion of the President, it was] decided, to call for applications for thel postion of secretary, to be in by ttfl next meeting. June 29th. I Mr Thomas complained about the feß members attending that night. Eveß people in the town did not seem to knoß about the meeting. n It was pointed out that there was nol advertisement in the News, only in thel “ Mail,” and Mr Thomas said that pro-1 bably accounted for the small attend-1 ance, and he proposed that they adver I tise in both papers, which was agreedl to. I On the motion of the President, Mr jJ D. Starkey was unanimously elected a member. I Votes of thanks were passed to thel outgoing officers and to all those whcl had assisted at the Show. I The meeting closed with a vote oM thanks to the chair. " I
