A social in aid cf St. Joseph’s Church is to be held in the Public Hall on Thursday evening. The committee have gone to a deal of trouble to get the hall in good order, and a very enjoyable social is promised. Mrs J. Vile, mother of Mr Job Vile, M.H.R., was 90 years of age on Tuesday, and is still hale and hearty. She has been the recipient of congratulations from many relatives and friends on attaining such a ripe old age. —“ Pahiatua Herald.”

At a meeting of the Te Aroha Ladies’ Hockey Club last night, Miss Spooner was elected captain and Miss A. Hare vice-captain. The Club have issued a challenge to the Waihou Ladies’ Club, but as they were unable to accept, it has been decided to play a team of gentle men, who will use straight sticks. The Directors of the Te Aroha Cooperative Dairying Company paid their annual inspection of creameries on Saturday, and found everything in first-class order. In cases where renewals or repairs were required the necessary order was given. The country passed through was looking in first-class condition. The Crown recently purchased several large blocks of native lands between Wanganui and Waitotara rivers, .and the Native Land Court (Mr Justice Sim) has, during the past few days partitioned off the Crown’s interests in the blocks to the extent of over 56,000 acres. It is understood the land is to be surveyed at once and put upon the market. There is a large number of hative owners in town willing to sell other large areas provided the Minister sanctions the transaction. Dr Buck, the new Maori Health Officer, who has been appointed to assist Dr. Pomare, is in Rotorua and had an interview with the Rotorua Town Council on Thursday evening. The difficulties confronting the Council in dealing with the sanitation of the pahs was pointed out to him by the chairman. Dr. Buck said that part of his business was to enquire into this matter and assured the Council that they could lely on every assistance from the Health Department. We have just received a copy of “ New Zealand in the Exhibition Year,” the special industrial and commercial number of the “ Weekly Press.” The illustrations, which are of a very high class, contain views of the principal towns of New Zealand, and among which is a fine one of Te Aroha, shows the town and surrouuding district. The commercial illustrations will give readers a good idea of what was shown at the Exhibition. The issue is turned out in the usual high-class ’manner for which the “ Press ” is noted, aud is well worth the published price of one shilling.
