At the inquest held on the lad Trevor, who was killed at the gas works last Saturday, a verdict of accidental death from the result of an explosion of benzine; how it happened there being no evidence to show. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

At tho Supreme Court, Helier, alias Smitters, was charged with the attempted murder of Nellie Jackson, on April sth, by cutting her throat. The jury, after ten minutes’ retirement, brought in a verdict of guilty. Justice Chapman said tbs jury would have failed in its 'duty had it brought in any other verdict. There were absolutely no mitigating circumstances. If the woman’s life had not been saved merely by the skill of the hospital staff, accused would have been found guilty of murder, and he could imagine no ground that would have induced his Government to spare his life. He would be failing in the performance of his duty to society were he to pretend to discover any mitierating circumstances. There was but one course open to him, and that was to inflict the highest senfence which the law allowed, and the accused wss sentenced to be imprisoned, with hard labour, for the rest of his life.
