A boy three years old, son of Mrs Adams, postmistress at Raupo, has been found drowned in a water-race. DUNEDIN, This Day. £7OO has been collected in the colony for the Chinese famine fund. AUCKLAND, This DayJohn Lewis was sentenced to two years for substituting a cheap ring for a valuable diamond one. Win. O. Williams received three years for false pretences at Hamilton. Albert Norman got two years for breach of probation. In the case of Henry J. Atkins, sent from the Lower Court, as an habitual offender, Judge Cooper said there was no reformatory in which such offenders could be dotaintd: he could not make an order, and the gaol must discharge him at the end of his three months’ term.
The Arbitration Court yesterday commenced hearing the cases against the Auckland Electric Tramway Company, and certain of its employees arising out of trouble which caused the temporary suspension of the service in noon last. Sydney Michael Farrelly, and Edward Fletcher, employees of the Tramway Company were charged with having committed a breach of section 15 of the Act, and the Auckland Electric Tramway Company was cited by the Inspector of Awards for a breach of clause 6 of the Tramway Workers’ Award, in that the company dismissed fourteen employees without giving them a week’s notice and without good cause. The case against the company was taken first and not concluded when the court rose.
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The man Smithers, whose -real name turns out to be Hehir, has been committed for trial on the charge of attempting to murder Nellie Jackson by cutting her throat. The tradespeople here state that business keeps up to the same standard as when the exhibition was open, and there has been no apparent falling off except in the number of visitors at the hotels.
Anckland-Mannkan Canal. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This DayIn reply to a deputation lion. Geo Fowlds said he was confident that if the Harbour Board undertook the construction of the proposed Waite-mata-Manukau Canal there would be no difficulty in getting the Government to give the board authority to raise the money required. The estimated cost is £788,000.
