Fire at Te Aroha.
At about three o'clock yesterday morning an alarm of fire was raised, and the Volunteer Fire Brigade promptly turned out, the conflagration being at the six-roomed house, occupied by Mr C. Everitt, sen, in Terminusstreet. It appears that the flames were first noticed by the inmates of the house, through being awakened by one of the children. By that time the flames had obtained a good hold upon tfie rear portion of the house, and the family had only just sufficient time in which to escape.uninjured. It was most unfortunate that the lateness of the discovery rendered it practically impossible to save any of the furniture and other contents of the house. When the brigade arrived, no time was lost in connecting to the water
supply, as somebody had already located the nearest plug and was marking the spot. The water pressure, however, did not appear to be at its best, possibly owing to the distance from the main supply pipe. But the brigade had a fierce fire to cope with, and the wind that was blowing did not mend matters. Rain fell during the progress of the fire, and to make matters worse, the wind veered completely round, for the moment placing the firemen in a very perilous position, and also directing the flames to another portion of the building. Credit is due
to the brigade for saving the whare that stands a few yards from the side of the house, and escaped with only a severe scorching at one end. The house itself was completely gutted, and very little, even of the charred remains, was left standing. We understand that the dwelling was owned by the occupant, and was insured for £IOO and the furniture for £SO in the Guardian office;
