The New Electorate Centre.
Cambridge newspaper, in advocating that the central polling place of the new electorate should be on this side or the mountain range which lies between Tauranga and Te Aroha says:— • ?-Once this principle, was established it would be for the Government to decide, whether the main booth should be established at Cambridge or Te Aroha. Whether this sound advice wa3 followed we do not know, but we have noticed that the Te Aroha paper, in its report of the Borough Council meeting, stated that the mayor of Cambridge had written, suggesting that the principal polling place should be at Te Aroha! Now it would appear that our contemporary was carried away by the exuberance of its local patriotism to make this statement, as it must know, as we have pointed out, that it is utterly incorrect; It would, in the face of this pis -statement, be interesting to know what the mayor of Te Aroha has suggested to the Government. Anyway we cannot believe that in writing on the subject to the Colonial Secretary, he would lend himself to misrepresenting what Mr Buckland suggested on the matter.”
After a careful search of our files, we , are unable to find such statement made in a report of the Borough Council meeting,, the only two items referring to the subject being, so far as we can discover as follows:—In report of Te Aroha. Borough Council Special meeting held Wednesday March 20th 1907: New Electorate.— The Mayor stated that he had communicated with the Colonial Secretary with a ; view to having Te Aroha fixed iipon as the chief polling place for the new Tauranga (or Piako) electorate. Ha had received a reply in which the Colonial Secrestated that the matter would receive consideration. Cambridge Borough Council and Piako-County -Council were also in favour of Te Aroha.as a centre. All the councillors present expressed great satisfaction at the move which the Mayor had made in this matter.
In report of Piako County meeting held March 25th 1907 : Electoral Centre. —The Town Clerk of Cambridge wrote stating that his Council was m favour of Te Aroha as the head polling place for the new electorate. . Notice that the matter would receive consideration, was received from the Electoral Department. The following is the letter which was received by the Piako County Council:— Cambridge Borough Council. Town Clerk’s Office, P. Gilchrist, Esq., Clerk Piako County Council, Te Aroha,
Dear Sir, New Electoral District, “ Tauranga.” .The Mayor of Cambridge has written to the Colonial Secretary pointing out that the great mass of the Electors of above district reside to the west of the range of hills lying between this district and Tauranga, and that it will be extremely inconvenient to have Tauranga as the Head polling place, especially in licensing matters. He has suggested Cambridge or Te Aroha as being more suitable, and has expressed the opinion that Te Aroha would probably give the most satisfaction. I am requested to ask that the Chairman of your county, if he has not already moved iii the matter, will make a strong appeal to the Government on above lines. Will you kindly give this parly attention.—Yours faithfully,
(Signed) F. Brooks, Town Clerk.
The reading of the above letter at the County meeting caused a little surprise to the chairman andcounc llors, who had naturally thought that Cambridge people would be more inclined to favour their own town as the centre. There is, however, no doubt that this letter from the Cambridge Borough Council is distinctly in favour of Te Aroha.
