BACHELORS AND SPINSTERS IN N.Z.
The oensuis return just to hand, dealing with the number of unmarried people in the (colony, is full of interest. It states,- among other things, that in April, 1906, the number of bachelor's in the colony over the age of twenty years was 9633 in excess ,of the number of spinstera aged fifteen years and more. At the last 'census, it is interesting to note, the reverse wa® the case, . .there being then 3572 more single women than men. The increase of male® is said to be due to the large Jnumiber of immigrants arriving from other parts, during the five yeare between the taking of the census. The ! South Island seems to be the spinsters’ paradise,, as. at each of the above -census' the provinces of. Otago and Canterbury showed a great preponderance of single women, while in every other province the position was to a greater or less extent reversed. The province whaeff’shows the greatest preponderance of spinsters in the last census is (kutertbury, where, in 1901, women than men. On thie other hand, Wellington holds the record on the opposite side, there being in 1906 an excess of bachelors over spinsters amounting to 4389.
