Goleman’s Greek Bridge.

VISIT OF INSPECTION-

Tho committee appointed by the Piako County Council to inspect t.h» new bridge over Coleman’s Creek at Aratia'ia, and report on the alleged departures from specification in its cons ruction by cmtract, made their visit to the spot on Tuesday last. In connection with the piles, which it was alleged were not sunk to the depth specified, ou comparing them with the plan and ;measuriDg according to scale, they were found to be above the ground over two feet in excess of the height indicated on the plan. The Engineer contended that this difference was owing to the fact that 17-foot piles had been used instead of 15-foot, and that the cost of the extra timber had beeu borne by the contractor. Whilst the objectors admit that this is an improvement to the bridge, it is asserted to be a lucky incident that the bridge has not been con structed according to the plan in this respect. The wheel-guards were found to be as reported—fastened down on tho deck of the bridge—wnereas the specification provided that they should be one inch above. The committee found on arriving at the bridge the galvanised iron covers had been placed on the headstocks.
