Regarding the statement that some farmers have found the spraying of potatoes with the Bordeaux mixture ineffective against the blight, the Biological Division is satisfied, from evidence received from different parts of New Zealand, that, the mixtnre, if properly applied, is efficacious- Many instances of this have been mentioned during the last few months (the New Zealand Times reports.) One grower in a Wairaiapa town, who used the mixture last, season, was in the fortunate p isition of being the only man in the neighbourhood who saved his crop. Similar stories came from the north. Only a few days ago a grower in the Auckland province, who kept his potatoes sound by three sprayings with the Bordeaux mixture, wrote to the division, expressing his satisfaction with this method, and stating that he had an American four-mow potato sprayer on the water. It will generally be found that when spraying fails it has been done in a slovenly and unintelligent manner.
Our best friends, the farmers, are strongly advised not to buy our latest in bedsteads and beds if they want the young folk pip in time to milk. For comfort they cannot be equalled. A Christchurch police officer told a reporter lately that during the past year or so two or. three local shopkeepers had reported to ihe newspapers t rat. their premises had been burglariously entered, and that property had been removed. No complaints were made to the police, whose first notice of the alleged robberies was the ac counts which they had read in the newspapers. Detectives had been sent to investigate the eases, and they had speedily discovered that the burg laiies had been mere advertising dodges. A couple of the tradesmen c infeased that they had been the pilferers of their own premises. They had hidden away ceitain articles, and had asserted that the property had been stolen.
With regard to a rumour which is being circulated, we are able to state that there is absolutely no doubt that Sept. 19th is Messrs Johnson and Wigg’s bonus day.—Advt.
