Grand Military Ball.
GREAT SUCCESS.
RECORD ATTENDANCE,
Thursday, evening was the occasion of the most successful function , which has eventuated during the present season, the event being the Annual Ball given by the officers, non-com-missioned officers and members of B Squadron, Piako Mounted Rifles, 2nd Batt. A.M.R v Dancing took place in the Public Hall, the interior being enlivened in appearance by a plentiful display of bunting and palms, by which latter the walls were completely covered. *2£t intervals around the sides of the hall, groups of bayonets arranged on shields, alternated with Union Jacks, to lend military flavour to the decorations. The platform and entrances thereto were partially concealed beneath a green mantle of palms, from behind which floated the exquisite strains of Mr Booth’s excellent Thames orchestra Numerous and pleasing was the variety of the ladies attire, which served as a relief to the smait regimental uniforms of the Officers and Members of the. corps. Extra waltzes were given on the pianoforte with tasteful execution by Miss Epsom, Miss Lipsey and Miss Knight. During the interval the assembly adjourned to the Town Hall, the interior having been suitably decorated with palms, flags, and other artistic embellishments, with the same careful attention as was bestowed on the other hall. Here a sumptuous supper was found to be in readiness, at which, upwards of 170 were able to sit down at the same time. Ample justice was done to the many dainty “dishes and tempting trifles provided. The warmest praise and thanks are due to those ladies who formed themselves into a committee to arrange this portion of the preparations, and who worked so well in the laying out and decoration of the tables and arrangement of numerous other details. After the return from supper, Captain Clifford, the Commanding Officer, presented the following medals, etc, which have been recently won in competitions. Pilling iMedals. —Ist. Farrier Wallace, 2nd. i Captain Clifford, after making the ■ presentations, said that it was indeed fortunate f that there were men who took such interest in the Volunteer : movement as to offer prizes. The medals given by Mr Pilling were a spontaneous gift, to which he (Capt. _ Clifford) knew they were welcome. There had been a long competition for I them, and there was little doibt that j they had been won' by the best men, and he was pleased to be able to present them to the winners. By winning the Heather-Roberton Belt three times ) in succession, Corporal McKee is en- ; titled to a Gold Medal. Captain Clifford said he did not want the boys ; to let Corporal McKee have it all his own way, and he hoped they would continue to improve in their shooting, j so that Corporal McKee would have a 1 hard struggle to maintain his high position.
