Waihou Notes.

—* (From our own Correspondent.) Farmers generally are feeling the effects of the recent rough weather with its accompaniment of cold rains and westerly winds ; this weather must however, be expected at this time of the year. Still it is very trying for milking cows, often causing them to diop a point or two in the test. . From the same cause the grass pastures and oat crops are receiving a slight check. The roads are now in a very sloppy condition, and full of numeri us holes, which, if not soon taken in hand, will soon get very bad, and very rough for vehicular traffic.

Tradespeople in Waihou are at present doing fair business in their respective branches. The recently started firm of Buchan and C>, are kept very busy at their carriage factory, and turning out some good work. The County Election will soon be round again, and a keea contest is expected. The different factions ap pe.ar to be now airing their views through the medium of the local paper. There is now a good percentage of young foals in the district, and so far most of the farmers breeding this class of stock are highly satisfied with their results, whilst others have not fared so well, one party having lost a very valuable mare last week during foaling. I think it is about time that the farmers took steps to get a Veterinary Surgeon stationed in this district, as when such cases as mentioned above occur, many a valuable beast could probably be saved by proper treatment. I notice that a new flax mill is being erected at Waitoa, by Messrs Farrow Bros, and should turn out to be a payable enterprise, as there are large areas of flax-growing country situated in this locality, but which' it at preeen' trucked out of the.district in its green sfate.

It is reported that the Homestead block, of the Waitoa Estate is now sold t,o Mr Death, who has also bought another block, situated on No 1. K-md, This speaks well for the quantity of the land in our district, although there does not appear to be the same demand in this district as formerly.
