A fire broke out in Kumara Town Hall last night and did £IOO worth of damage before being extinguished. The insurance was allowed to lapse a few days ago. Timaru, This Day. John Mclntyre, farmer, near Plea.sant Point, was found at 6 a.m. this morning on the roadside near his house, shot. It is thought to be a case of suicide. Henry Oldfield, farmer, Temuka. was drowned this morning whilst trying to cross the Ophi with a t am when the river was in flood, Invercargill, This Day. The Costal Co’s, steamer. Rose Casey, was stranded on the Riverton bar last night, through an accident to her machinery. She sprang a leak and no w has eight feet of water in her hold. There is no possibility of refloa'ing her at present. She is owned by the company and is insured at Dunedin for £2,300 Seven youths before the court for assault had squirted water on a young man who was walking with a lady, and on his remonstrating twice, they knocked him down. One boy was discharged, but as to the other six, the Magistrate said their conduct was cowardly and brutal. They were sons of respectable parents, but did not know how to behave themselves ; to give them some inducement to do so he fined each £5 and ordered them to find sureties in £SO to keep the peaceful* 12 months, Mr C. Rankin, a well-known resident of Stewart Island was found dead in bed. A pool of blood was beside him indicating* a broken blood vessel
Cecil Hazlett was fined L 5 for striking Lieut--Col, Hawkins across the back with a whip, Defendant, who is not a volunteer, was in a restaurant , where the m rnnted rifles were holding a meeting. He borrowed a whip and struck several persons in the same wav, but had published au apology in the papers, in which was desoribed the assault qf horse whipping which was held to be an aggravating offence. A writ of L6OO for libel has been issued against a brother officer of Hawkins’ who wrote on the subject of the assault to a local paper with some warmth. Wellington, This Day. The steamship Mararoa had a very rough passage from Sydney on Monday. «A wave broke aboard and swept tbe second officer and also hurlii g the helmsman along the bridge, bruising them severely and carried away some of the seats. At midday yesterday, off Terawhiti, another huge sea struck her, breaking two ports and flooding the apa saloon.
