Correspondence

To the Editor

Sir, —There is a letter in the last issue of your paper signed Rip Van Winkle,” the writer of which must certainly bo a very new chum in Te Aroha, or he would not write in the strain he has done. While having a solid grievance in the railway station, all the old hands in Te Aroha know that previous to the present Government there was very little done for this town of ours, but from the time Mr Seddon’s party got into power, fc> the present time, thero has been no session in which there has not been a sum placed on tho Estimates for tho Domain and Baths. I might mention, with your permission, a few of tlie improvements : The Cadman bath house, second In none this side of tho lino ; the howling green ; several other now bath houses ; tennis grounds and tho buying of native interests in Morgan-town, and according to Thursday’s issuo of the Herald, acquiring native rights of Lipsoy-town. .1 admit tho present railway station is certainly an oyo-soro, still I am one who will not deny credit where credit is due, and would even give “Old Harry” his due. P.S.—There was one word in my last letter which I hope you will give me space to corroct, viz., “ understrappers,” which is a very offensive word and should not bo used in any sense of tho present Domain officials. In Mr Dalton as head gardener, the Government has a man who thoroughly understands liis business and has made his department one of the beauty spots in New Zealand. There is another gentleman, Mr Stanley, who is known throughout the colony for his courtesy and thorough knowledge of tho baths and springs, and whoso ability has not yet been acknowledged as it ought to bo, lie had Charge of the Domain previous to tho Government taking it. over. 1. have always heard tho other officials in t.lio Domain spoken of in the highest terms for their attention and eourfosy. I cannot, intrude further on your space, lmt continue te hope that; the Borough or townspeople will agitato for a station, L am, etc., John AVu.ua.jis,
