A young man named Walter Jukes was killed while bushfelling at Ohau, Auckland, The dead body of a young man Henry Sale, missing since August 11th when he went out in a boat, Was recovered from the harbour to-day, Wanganui, this day. At the police court several men were fined £1 to £lO for breaches of prohibition order Christchurch, This Day. Jas. Lyndhirst was sentenced to 12 months for passing glided farthings tor half-sovereigns, Dunedin, This Day. Two Chinamen were fined £lO and £2 for hiving opium in their possession or smoking it. Both said they could not do without it, one 60 'years of age, had smoked it 40 years. Other charges are ponding, Invercargil, This Day.
At the Supreme Court the trial of Daniel Swan, charged with wife-murd-er commenced. Accused battered her head in with a flat iron aud cut I her throat in the presence of their I daughter. It is said that defendant ■ was jealous of a boarder named Clarke I but there appears to be absolutely no I ground for this. Owing to accused’s I bad conduct, his wife obtained a sepn« | ation g irder but received her husband I back in the house though marital re- | lations were not resumed. I Auckland. This Day. I Percy Dawson was before the Court | yesterday, charged with stealing 1 £2938 from the Racing Club between [September 1904 and August 1905, [ and with falsifying the books. Mr I W. Percival, secretary of the Auckland I Racing Club said the accused was first I employed as clerk in 1902 at £l5O per [ annum. He had to keep books, collect ! money and pay it into the bank. | About £40,000 to £50,000 per annum I would pass through' his hands, WitI ness had nothing to do with the accounts or cash. Auditor Isaacs audited nhe books at frequent intervals and j the only supervision accused had was I the auditor’s. In cross examination ! wit nean said Dawson had two sisters | dependent on him, one a chronic in- [ valid. There were irregularities by I members of the club themselves in [regard to cash. Mr Morrin, when j chairman, used to obtain club money j from the accused, giving his cheque in exchange with instructions not to present it, Mr W. A. Church, accountant, put in a report on the | defalcations he had discovered amountI ing to £2939 8s 6d. He could not say why the auditor had not discovered them earlier and did not consider a proper audit had ever been made and did not like the system of book keep© ing. Detective Marsack said the accused, when arrested at Suva, only had the «lothes he stood in and £l2 18s 6d. Dawson pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
A large quantify of jewellery was stolen from the Caledonian Hotel last week and ijon Tuesday night a man named Tapp was arrested in consequence of frying to pawn so me of the missiug articles. Five foreign sailors from the steamer Vienna were charged at the Court with absenting themselves or disobeying orders. They complained about the food but the office s denied that there was anv cause. The men said they wort ashore to consult the Secretary of the S Him ns’ unioD but the Stipenpairy Magistrate sentenced them to 48 hours imprim ament anl to forfeit out of their wages, the pay for substitutes.
